When I first started my business, I made a little list of some general goals I had when everything just seemed like a distant dream—“book 20 weddings!” “shoot a destination wedding” “get to know 5 other photographers.” They seem funny now but to me they were big goals. One of the other ones on the list was to be featured in Martha Stewart Weddings. I still feel that Martha Stewart brings such unique and fresh ideas to the table in what can be a very repetitive industry, and they continually feature some of the most lovely photography from photographers that I admire. I photographed Matt and Mindy’s wedding at KAM Israel in Hyde Park and Cafe Brauer in Lincoln Park this summer—Mindy worked tirelessly on all of the incredible details from the day and also had dreams of maybe having it end up in Martha. Needless to say, I was so excited when their gorgeous wedding was featured as a real wedding on their site! Not the magazine, but still such a honor. Many thanks to the incredible team from this day—Anthony Navarro, who was just incredible; Jesse Deckard, one of the most talented designers in the city; and Bethany Fritz, who was an enormous help in photographing the day. You can view the feature here. Below are a few larger photos of some of their beautiful details and some additional photos that were not featured.
I met Rachel and Daniel early in 2011 and immediately took such a liking to them. However, with several months passing between when we met and their wedding day, I grew curious to see how the day would actually unfold—13 bridesmaids (!), quite a traditional venue, trying to remember the energy of the couple, etc. - I wasn’t completely sure what to expect. But, wow! Wow, wow, wow. These two and this wedding! I have truly never seen a couple so incredibly excited to be marrying one another. Both Rachel and Daniel are such beautiful, kind and fun people—I have never seen a bride and groom laughing and smiling so much on their wedding day. Myself, second photographer and assistant all thought it was one of the best weddings we had ever photographed—beautiful, touching, fun, personal, elegant and relaxed all at once. Daniel’s younger brothers may also win the award for best toast I have ever heard at a wedding. Both Rachel and Daniel come from such wonderful families that made the entire day such a pleasure and a breeze, and Daniel’s actor and improviser friends made the dance floor a blast, to say the least. Thank you, you two. It was such a pleasure and joy to be a part of your incredible day! Thanks as always to my favourite team—Sarah Postma for incredible second shooting and the always fabulous Miss Casey Winkleman for invaluable assisting.
Some other great vendors from this day: Venue: Standard Club | Floral/Decor: Jessica at Botanicals | Cake: Amy Beck | Coordinator: Lisa Zimbler | Dress: Monique Lhuiller
Laura and Elliot’s July wedding was such a treat; it was such an easy, relaxed and beautiful wedding—a dream for a photographer! Laura and Elliot’s day had a couple of snafus early on, but through it all, both of them kept such a laid-back attitude to the day. They were originally to be married on the beautiful patio at Chicago History Museum, but due to forecasted (though not-present!) thunderstorms and the opressive humidity, they opted to celebrate indoors. Originally I was a little disappointed from a photography perspective, always crossing my fingers for outdoor ceremonies, but the indoor option at CHM is truly just as lovely and it was a stunning and cool setting for their vows, with the beautiful natural light, stained glass, and gorgeous chuppah allowing for lovely images. They had a bit of a dream team of vendors, with almost all of my favourite people in each vendor category involved in the day. My favorite DJ and partner in crime, Rachel, from Toast & Jam kept the guests boogeying all night long, the awesome Lori from LOLA Event Productions kept the day moving at such a relaxed and enjoyable pace, my friend Renee Price from Kehoe Designs did an incredible job turning the Chicago History Museum spaces into romantic, French-inspired rooms, Food for Thought provided incredible and creative food, Bittersweet (my favourite cakes) had an array of delicious cake flavors for guests to choose from, and the always fantastic Sonia Roselli made Laura look so lovely! Thanks as always, as well, to my amazing assistant Casey Winkleman who took some amazing photos at this event. I had such a marvelous time with these two and just wish they lived closer! Hope you two have a marvelous rest of the year in Boston, filled with great food! :)
I photographed the sweetest little 20-person celebration in February that I hope to share some photos of soon, but Amy and David’s wedding was my first big wedding of the year, and it was a great way to kick it off! They held a celebration over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend at the beautiful Cafe Brauer in the heart of Lincoln Park. We ran past crowds of partygoers decked out with green and gold beads to take a couple photos at the river; this was my first time going down there for the dyeing of the river, and wow, it was green (feel like I had to offer a disclaimer so no one thinks I was doing some crazy photoshopping!).
They truly have one of the sweetest love stories I’ve ever heard, having met in kindergarten and making a childhood pact to marry if they weren’t already by a certain date. While they fell in love independently of that childhood promise, it was still incredibly neat to see that childhood letter displayed at their reception. Both of them have such kind spirits and obviously care so deeply for one another, and I think these qualities really were evident throughout the day and consequently, in their photos.
Amy and David also had an usually great set of vendors that I needed to give credit to:
Venue: Cafe Brauer | Dress: Lela Rose | Floral + Chuppah Design: Heffernan Morgan | Coordinator: Atmosphere Events | Catering: Blue Plate | Band: Ken Arlen Orchestra (These guys were AMAZING! Holy cow. So professional and so talented and had the dance floor packed all night.)
