Maggie and Nick were engaged Christmas 2010, and really wanted to be married this summer. As many couples discover, making that happen in Chicago can be a next-to-impossible proposition, as venues book up so so quickly. As they began to sort through options, they found a combination of church and reception that had an August date availability, Saint Clement and The Drake. Saint Clement was the church where both Maggie’s grandparents and parents were married, and Maggie’s parents also had their own wedding reception at the Drake years ago. So, in effect, Maggie and Nick had the same wedding as their parents! This was just incredible to me, but it was even more incredible as the whole day felt so perfect and appropriate for Maggie and Nick, as though they were the first to be married in these places.
Given the history with the venues, it was no surprise that this day was a bit of a family affair. Both Maggie and Nick come from delightful families, and Maggie is one of four girls and Nick is one of three boys, so their wedding party was composed of just their siblings, which made the day and portrait time so intimate and relaxed. Maggie was so beautiful and just so cute—so emotional during the first look, which is always so touching and beautiful to see! I am not a “crier” by nature, but as I was editing their photos I actually teared up myself when Maggie and her dad saw each other for the first time right after she saw Nick. Anything touching with fathers and I am a goner! :) It was so beautiful to see the emotion between them and I felt so privileged to capture it! Along with all the emotion through the beginning of the day, the reception shifted to include oh-so-much-fun, with wonderful toasts and one of the most fun dance floors I’ve shot this year! My favourite band, Ken Arlen Orchestra, kept things going into the wee hours. It was such a gorgeous day!
