I first met this groom many years ago when I shot one of my first weddings with the company he worked for, Kehoe Designs. We became “industry friends,” and it has been wonderful to see both of our careers grow and change over time. When he got engaged, I was so flattered when he asked me to photograph his wedding. It is always such a privilege to work for other industry professionals since you know they see a lot of work!
They are a very romantic and very fun couple, and their wedding reflected both of those elements of their personality. They had a very traditional ceremony at their church that was emotional and thoughtful, and then they had a crazy party at The Geraghty, Kehoe’s new wedding venue, which they totally transformed.
Ryan was very clear that he wanted me to just “do my thing” on the day and get as creative as a I wanted to. I really pushed myself on this wedding to take some risks, something that can be a little scary to do on a regular wedding day — so many moments happen on a wedding day, and there are so many ways or angles to shoot all of these moments from. When you take a risk to shoot from one angle or using different lighting, that means you give up the opportunity to capture it the “safe” way since the moment will pass. It is always a bit of an internal struggle to decide between taking a risk — which will either yield something amazing or fail! — and taking the safe shots that won’t blow anyone away but will be a nice memory of the moment. It’s something I balance at every wedding! I tried hard on this wedding, though, to push myself to try to take some risks and had confidence in the couple’s trust of me. I was so glad for that opportunity, as I was able to take some of my favorite photos of my career at this wedding (the kiss shot at the ceremony, the shot of the bride dancing with her dad, and the champagne shot at the end).
