I first met one of these grooms about ten years ago in a kickball league that I played in for six years. A few years into the league, these two through another kickball friend, who would later officiate their wedding. Many years of flip cup games, kickball, and various Chicago apartments later, Eric proposed to Michael, and they decided to have a Chicago wedding at the height of fall.
One of the groom’s father’s job is related to national sports, and part of why they selected their date was because no major sports events fell on that date. Ironically, the Chicago Cubs ended up winning the world series and the parade was slated to be held…the day of the wedding…literally outside of their venue. Everyone decided to just embrace it, and we ended up still going outside and taking photos amongst some of the revelers. I absolutely loved these photos — everyone in Chicago was in the best mood, and the city was filled with such a sense of joy. Revelers shouted out congratulations, gave high fives, and insisted on taking photos with the grooms. It was a once in a lifetime experience!
Their Chicago Athletic Association Hotel wedding was a perfect event — one that managed to have one of the sweetest ceremonies I’ve shot along with what was definitely one of the best parties I’ve ever shot, with guests getting truly crazy on the dance floor til the lights went out! I absolutely love shooting same-sex weddings; there is always such a feeling of absolute joy and happiness for the couple, with the couple and guests full of joy and gratefulness that our loved ones can marry who they wish, and the reception being a celebration of more than just the couple. This wedding was no exception, with joy permeating the entire day.
